DENVER - Colorado approved roughly 5,100 oil and gas drilling permits last year, down from the record 8,027 issued in 2008 before the recession. NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of some top coal companies were up at the close of trading: Arch Coal rose $1.08 or 4.6 percent, to $24.56. Consol Energy rose $1.58 or 3.0 percent, to $54.53. Massey Energy rose $1.88 or 4.3 percent, to $46.03. Peabody Energy rose $1.62 or 3.4 percent, to $49.49.

HECO inks contract for renewable biodiesel

(AP:HONOLULU) Hawaiian Electric Co. says it has taken an important step in its efforts to create a clean energy economy for Hawaii. HECO announced Tuesday that it has signed a two-year contract to have a mainland company supply 3 million to 7 million gallons of renewable biodiesel per year.
